As many as 32 bands can compete, with 10 advancing to the evening finals. Regional Championships are complete, one day championships with educational events. All are exceptional venues for amazing performances and are evaluated by experts. It was created in 1976 as “Marching Bands of America” and renamed in 1984. What is Bands of America?īands of America is a Music for All program with more than one million alumni. This fall, 22 Bands of America (BOA) Championships will be held throughout the U.S. Our high school participates in the southeast regional, but there are marching band competitions across the country. Just as the football team practices and prepares for a shot at the playoffs, the band trains for its big dance at the Bands of America regional competition. His band isn’t JUST a spirit band- it’s a competitive band (and a darn good one, too!). Now with a year under my belt as an official “band mom,” I get it. Not having a background in music, I didn’t understand why all the fuss. I didn’t envision countless hours of summer practice and daily practices once school resumed. I imagined the tattoo accompanying the cheerleaders and the military precision of a halftime show. Overall, I think this museum deserves to charge a higher price in comparison to some temples where I paid more but didn't walk away with the same level of appreciation and knowledge as I did with this museum.When our son joined the high school band, I had visions of Friday night lights and a rousing drum beat calling to the crowd at our high school football games. There is an opportunity to make your own kaleidoscope and buy one for varying costs. It was also nice to see a room of kaleidoscopes made by children as it gave insight into their imagination. The room became dark and the projector illuminated on the walls around the room different kaleidoscope patterns with gentle music.Īfter a while, it got tiring picking up every single kaleidoscope, but at least I can say I learned well about the different ways to make them inside and the different ways to construct them on the outside. On the hour, there is a visual show, which was really brought me back to my childhood. Third, despite being the only visitor at the time, I had a nice Japanese lady waiting on me to make sure that I was looking at the kaleidoscopes properly and she tried to answer my questions using hand gestures. Second, after having spent most of my time in Kyoto frustrated with people's limited knowledge of English and expensive tourist sites that provided very little information for English speaking visitors, I found that I had a better time at this museum despite the staff not speaking English (although sometimes their helpful actions made me think they understand English). It was only when I was in Kyoto that I received a map of the city and saw an advert for the museum on the map. But, during my 8 days in Kyoto, this was one of 2 sites that stood out for me from a service perspective and I thought it deserves a review in hope of raising its ranking on TripAdvisor so more people are aware of it.įirst, this museum was not a pre-determined itinerary. I normally don't do TripAdvisor reviews on tourist sites I visit as there are just too many.
