Moses wanted to know what to tell the enslaved Israelites when they inquired of him the name of the God of their forefathers who had sent him to deliver them. Since he was viewed as a deity, his firstborn son would die. And these gods which they had fashioned with their own hands could now be appeased.Īs a matter of fact, each of the ten plagues was probably directed against an Egyptian god, including the pharaoh. And there was a god of frogs, a god of lice, a god of flies, a god of hail, a god of locusts, a god of the Nile - the Egyptians fashioned gods for almost anything that could trouble them. Even Pharaoh himself was viewed as a god. Down in Egypt the children of Israel had become familiar with a host of Egyptian gods. Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?” (Ex. Moses responded to God’s command to him with a question, “. This strong, faithful One was going to use Moses to deliver the children of Israel from Egyptian slavery (Ex. God was telling Moses that He was the strong, faithful One of his forefathers. I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. When God spoke to Moses at the burning bush, He identified Himself by saying, “. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said. So when he tempts Eve to be unholy, he omits the name Jehovah: “. The serpent is sly, subtle, crafty - he knows that the name LORD (Jehovah) speaks of God’s holiness. And with divine wisdom and infinite grace He provided a way through which sinful man can be saved without compromising His holiness and justice. The LORD (Jehovah) is holy, He hates sin, but He loves the sinner. How comforting, therefore, the third characteristic of this name for God. In the Garden of Eden it is the LORD (Jehovah), the holy One, who pronounces judgment upon the sin of Adam and Eve (Gen. Since the LORD (Jehovah) is holy, He hates sin and must always judge it. The second characteristic of the LORD (Jehovah) comes naturally out of the first truth. They would be admonished to be a holy people because the LORD (Jehovah) is a holy God. And for one year the LORD (Jehovah) would instruct the children of Israel at Mount Sinai. The triumphant song of Moses following the deliverance of the Israelites at the Red Sea is this, “Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness. There are three dominant characteristics associated with this name. As the name Elohim - “the strong, faithful One” - can be identified in the Authorized or King James Version because it is written capital “G” and lower case “od,” or God, so Jehovah can be recognized because it is written in all capital letters, either “LORD” or “GOD.” And as with all of God’s names, it reveals something of the divine character, setting Him apart from and infinitely higher than all other beings. It is the most prevalent name for God in the Bible, occurring more than seven thousand times. Jehovah is the second of the three primary names for God.
